Mayor Brandon Scott of Baltimore has consistently encountered racism, both overtly and subtly, throughout his tenure. The recent backlash following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge brought this issue to the forefront once again, with Scott being pejoratively labeled as a “DEI Mayor” on social media. He interpreted this term as a veiled racist insult, suggesting that critics used it as a proxy to express more overtly racist sentiments.

Scott's response to these attacks is rooted in a deep sense of identity and resilience, informed by the historical struggles of his ancestors. He sees the use of “DEI” (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) as a term weaponized by some to undermine and devalue his achievements and the broader goals of social equity.
