7:36Now Playing🔴 Biden’s Disaster Performa Was One for the Ages
President Joe Biden's ability to serve a second term has come under intense scrutiny following his faltering performance in last week's debate against Donald Trump. Throughout the debate, Biden occasionally struggled to complete or articulate his thoughts under pressure, raising concerns about his capacity to lead.
To some media critics, the focus on Biden's fitness is long overdue. Jill Abramson, former executive editor of The New York Times, expressed her astonishment at the widespread surprise over Biden's debate struggles. Speaking to Semafor, Abramson remarked, “It is simply astounding for the entire country, including its most seasoned reporters, to be as shocked as everyone was by the ugly and painful reality of Biden's debate performance.” She argued that the press has failed in its duty to hold those in power accountable, despite the difficulty in reporting such a sensitive issue.
Biden's opponents have seized upon his debate performance to bolster their criticisms. Ainsley Earhardt, host of “Fox & Friends,” noted that conservatives have long questioned Biden’s cognitive abilities. This sentiment reflects a broader narrative that has been simmering for months, with many Americans already questioning Biden's fitness for office.
Throughout the campaign, Biden's aides have vehemently denied any suggestion that he is mentally diminished. Supporters of the president are frustrated by the media's focus on his cognitive abilities, especially when compared to the scrutiny faced by Trump regarding his truthfulness.
Public concern about Biden's age and mental acuity is not new. An Associated Press-NORC poll from August 2023 found that three-quarters of U.S. adults believed the 81-year-old president was too old to effectively serve another term. A subsequent poll in February revealed that six in 10 adults lacked confidence in Biden's mental capability to serve as president. Interestingly, a similar sentiment was shared about his 78-year-old Republican opponent, Donald Trump.
Historically, media standards for covering a president's health have evolved significantly. For instance, the severity of President Woodrow Wilson's 1919 stroke was largely hidden from the public, and Franklin D. Roosevelt's disability was downplayed in the pre-television era.
A recent story by four New York Times reporters highlighted observations from several individuals who encountered Biden behind closed doors, noting that he often appeared confused, listless, or lost the thread of conversations. These reports add to the growing debate over Biden's capacity to effectively lead the country for another four years.
