Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to Donald Trump’s campaign, told House Republican lawmakers and senior staff that they expect Vice President Kamala Harris to deliver a “fine” performance during the upcoming debate on Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the call. LaCivita’s remarks, made during a Friday call with GOP members, reflect the Republican camp’s anticipation of a different dynamic compared to the first debate, where President Joe Biden’s underwhelming performance led to his withdrawal from the race.
Harris, who has gained significant momentum since becoming the Democratic nominee, is seen as a formidable opponent, despite having less recent live debate experience than Trump. LaCivita highlighted this lack of recent practice as a potential factor, but he noted that Harris is nonetheless expected to perform well.
In a broader discussion on GOP strategy, LaCivita pointed to opportunities for Republicans to reclaim the Senate, specifically in key battleground states like West Virginia and Montana. Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence in expanding the Republican majority in the House, with some projections suggesting an increase of up to 13 seats.
Republican pollster Tony Fabrizio also spoke on the call, encouraging members to stay focused on district-specific messaging, emphasizing that the party can overcome the Democrats’ financial advantage in the upcoming elections.
