The spectacle that unfolded at the Thornton Township board meeting was less a meeting of elected officials and more a reality TV episode gone horribly wrong. One might assume that a gathering of public servants would be focused on addressing community concerns, but instead, taxpayers were treated to an all-out melee, featuring Supervisor Tiffany Henyard herself jumping into the fray. Because apparently, ensuring the smooth operation of local government is secondary to engaging in a full-on brawl when an activist dares to hurl an expletive.
This chaotic scene, which ended with police intervention and the removal of activist Jedidiah Brown, seems to perfectly encapsulate the dysfunction plaguing Thornton Township under Henyard’s leadership. Rather than demonstrating professionalism and composure in the face of criticism, Henyard and her entourage—including, notably, her boyfriend—chose to escalate the situation, turning a township meeting into a circus act. It’s almost poetic that this was the very meeting where a vacancy was finally filled, allowing the board to approve necessary governance measures like the township’s tax levy ordinance and insurance. Because clearly, running an effective government takes a back seat to trading blows in a public forum.
