Victor Marx’s appearance on Piers Morgan struck me less as a serious defense of Christianity than as Christianity converted into theater. The problem is not faith. The problem is spectacle. When every disagreement becomes spiritual warfare, every critic becomes an agent of darkness and every political controversy is dressed up as an apocalyptic struggle between God and Satan, theology stops illuminating events and starts functioning as stagecraft. Marx projects certainty with the intensity of a revival preacher, but intensity is not evidence and religious vocabulary does not magically transform speculation into fact. Christianity has an enormous intellectual tradition built around humility, discernment, restraint, charity and the recognition that human beings can be profoundly mistaken. Turning that tradition into a dramatic performance of demons, enemies, prophecy and righteous vengeance risks making faith look less like Christianity and more like a supernatural political thriller. Piers Morgan’s format only amplifies the effect because television rewards conflict, facial expressions and theatrical declarations rather than careful argument. The result can become a strange fusion of religion and entertainment where the audience is invited to feel rather than think. Christianity deserves better than being reduced to props, ominous warnings and performative certainty. Faith should challenge hysteria, not provide the costume department for it.
