4:24Now PlayingPowerful storms killed at least 15 people, injured hundreds and left a wide trail of destruction Sunday across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Kentucky after obliterating homes and destroying a truck stop where dozens sought shelter in a restroom during the latest deadly weather to strike the central U.S.
The communities of Dallas, Garland, Richardson and Plano were the hardest hit in the Dallas County area. Pounding wind and rain uprooted trees, damaged buildings, flooded roads and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people.
In the Magnolia area of Texas, two homes under construction reportedly collapsed. Officials confirmed a 16-years-old who was working a summer job, was trapped and later died.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who earlier declared a state of emergency, said that five people had died in his state. Seven deaths were recorded in Cooke County, Texas, and eight deaths across Arkansas were due to the severe weather. Two people died in Mayes County, Oklahoma, authorities said.
President Joe Biden sent condolences to the families of people who died. He said the Federal Emergency Management Agency is on the ground conducting damage assessments and he has contacted governors to see what federal support they might need
