At a graveside service in Houston, Rev. Al Sharpton, joined by Floyd's family, said the 46-year-old Black man symbolized all those "who are defenseless against people who thought they could put their knee on our neck." LiveNOW's Christina Evans spoke with Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey, a national news anchor, educator, and community leader, as communities across the nation marked the five-year anniversary.
During the gathering in Houston, the Rev. Al Sharpton likened George Floyd's death to the 1955 murder of Emmett Till. Till was a 14-year-old Black boy who was kidnapped, mutilated, and killed in Mississippi for allegedly disrespecting a white woman.
Events today and this weekend in Minneapolis focused on George Floyd Square, the intersection where Floyd died. Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd's neck for over 9 minutes at this location, despite Floyd's pleas of "I can't breathe."
