Their main goal has been to turn five Republican seats into Democrat seats during next year's midterm elections. The legislature has already landed on Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk for a signature. Newsom says the move to put aside maps drawn by an independent redistricting commission is a response to efforts in Texas and other GOP states to redraw districts in their favor.
