We humans will likely always be politically divided due to our perception of civil rights and what are civil liberties.
They’re two phrases that often get mixed up but they’re quite different. “Civil rights” are individual rights threatened by majorities to favor some over others in a society. So in order to protect civil rights, we must make sure majorities in a society don’t discriminate against minorities.
“Civil liberties,” on the other hand, are our individual freedoms threatened by people in power, usually the government. Civil rights often require the government to act in the name of equality, whereas civil liberties require the government to get out of the way in the name of freedom.
While people mostly agree that both civil rights and civil liberties be protected, they will likely always argue about what SHOULD be a civil right or civil liberty. More importantly, they will likely always argue about which are more important, civil rights or civil liberties?
