In my opinion, time capsules are one of the best ways to trick people into learning history.
They are intentional messages to the future that I think truly capture how people of a particular time and place see themselves and the world around them. They preserve untainted primary sources to teach a future generation about a culture and identity so that they better understand it. It’s one of the best ways to connect with our descendants.
Burying a time capsule is an act of faith in the future. When we bury a time capsule, we hope that someone will actually be around to open it. Will someone be around to open mine? I absolutely refuse to think someone won’t be.
