4:51Now PlayingI just found out my breast implants were recalled.
If you’re thinking "Wait, Mel Robbins? You have breast implants?!” Yup, I do - after breastfeeding three kids, my boobs looked like a pair of gym socks filled with sand.
I’ve only had the implants a few years, and since getting them, I have had numbness in my right arm, so I started investigating getting them removed. That’s how I learned about the recall!
Like anyone who gets surprising medical news, I googled it and learned my Allergen biocell textured implants were recalled due to cases of lymphoma.
The old Mel would have spent 24 hours hyperventilating on WebMD, sending frantic messages and articles to my friends. But I didn't allow myself to do that this time, and there’s a simple reason why:
Worrying about something you can’t control is a terrific way to torture yourself.
Life is about decisions. When you are faced with scary news, an unexpected bill, the words “I don’t love you anymore,” or “you’re fired,” or “your implants have been recalled,” you have a decision to make.
Are you going to let your worries consume you, or are you going to fight back and take control of your mind? I know my decision. I’m taking control of my mind.
The implants are already in me, so there's zero reason to beat myself up over it. There’s zero benefit to feeling regret or guilt or shame. Allowing those negative thoughts to enter my mind would just make me feel worse. So I don’t.
Every time a worry floats into my mind, I interrupt it: “I’m not thinking about that.” And then I replace it with this: “I have surgery in six weeks with one of the world’s leading experts on this. If I get negative news, I’ll deal with it then. And, whatever happens, I won’t go through it alone.”
I’ll keep you posted on how everything goes. I’m feeling grateful and proud that I figured this out, jumped into action, and am facing it with a positive and resilient mindset, one thought at a time.
