33:06Now Playing"Ensuring that Minnesotans have what they need to recover from disaster is one of the most basic functions of government." Senator Vicki Jensen, DFL-Owatonna, told members of the Senate Finance Committee as she introduced her legislation Thursday, January 15, providing disaster relief funds to areas affected by natural disasters in June of 2014.
Jensen explained to members that a disaster relief contingency fund, passed last session, provides funds for relief without the need for a special legislative session. However, there was not enough money in the fund to cover all 37 counties and 2 Native American reservations in the state that were affected by last summers' heavy rains, floods, mudslides and straight-line winds.
Jensen's bill provides the required state match of $6.7 million dollars to receive federal disaster funds. It passed on a unanimous voice-vote in committee.
