19:42Now PlayingThe low water levels on White Bear Lake spurred the White Bear and Mahtomedi school districts to implement water conservation efforts. A bill carried by Senator Charles Wiger, DFL-Maplewood, presented to the Senate E-12 Committee Thursday, March 26, would continue the efforts.
The "Race 2 Reduce" proposal would appropriates funds to the two school districts for programs aimed at raising water conservation awareness. "We have a significant challenge in Minnesota in addressing water supply, shortages, the sustainability of water," said Wiger.
After raising money to help those in Africa have clean, accessible water, White Bear sixth grader Sophie Davis told committee members she has a new appreciation for the plentiful water in America and plans to do her part to conserve. She said, "Before, I didn't really think about how I could go to any sink and get water at any time. Now, I try to save water by simply taking shorter showers and turning off the water when I brush my teeth."
