37:33Now PlayingA bill to boost Minnesota tourism efforts by nearly $13 million dollars won the approval of the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Policy and Legacy Finance Committee Monday, January 30. Sponsored by Senator Carrie Ruud, R-Breezy Point, the measure would allocate about $10 million dollars to the Explore Minnesota efforts, while adding an additional $2 million dollars for improving the organization's web presence.
According to Sara Psick of the Minnesota Tourism Growth Coalition, for every one dollar invested in tourism, an estimated $98 dollars in traveler spending and $9 dollars in local and state taxes is generated. Terry Mattson of Visit St. Paul said that tourism in Minnesota is a $14.4 billion dollar annual industry, supporting about 260,000 full and part-time jobs. "Minnesota continues to be vastly outspent by our competitors in the effort to draw visitors and their dollars from other states," he said.
