16:27Now PlayingSenate Republicans held a press conference Wednesday, March 1, to express their frustration with Governor Mark Dayton’s position on the REAL ID bill. According to media reports, Governor Dayton has requested that Senate DFL members withdraw their support from the bill, unless it is revised to include language allowing for undocumented immigrants to obtain Minnesota drivers' licenses.
Senate Republicans argued that illegal immigration and REAL ID are separate issues, with the REAL ID provision being a stand-alone issue. Without passing a REAL ID law, proponents argue, many Minnesotans may not be able to board commercial airlines or access federal buildings, without a passport or other form of federally-approved identification, which currently does not include a Minnesota driver’s license.
Senate Majority leader Paul Gazelka stated, "I'm extremely disappointed to find out that what should be a simple, bipartisan effort to pass REAL ID has been turned into a political football to force the issue of granting undocumented immigrants driver’s licenses. There’s no reason to link these two issue; we need to get REAL ID done."
