17:37Now PlayingMinnesota's current law exempting sales taxes from being imposed on Super Bowl tickets would be extended to other Super Bowl events sponsored by the NFL, according to a bill presented Tuesday, March 14, to the Senate Tax Committee. Sponsored by Senator Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook, the exemption was an agreement reached between the NFL and key policymakers when Minnesota was vying to host the event.
According to Maureen Bausch of the Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee, the event will generate about $400 million dollars in economic activity. The lost of revenue to the State of Minnesota's General Fund would be $900,000, according to host committee figures.
"The intent really was that we get our tax environment in the same place where other host cities have," said Bakk in explaining the reason Governor Dayton and previous legislative leaders agreed to the NFL's expectations.
The bill was laid over for possible inclusion in the omnibus tax bill.
