33:32Now PlayingGovernor Mark Dayton presented Major General Jon A. Jensen as the 31st Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard during a State Capitol press conference Wednesday, August 30. Jensen will replace Major General Richard C. Nash when he retires at the end of October.
Jensen served as a National Guardsman for 29 years and a full-time soldier for 20 years. Hserved as the Commanding General of the 34th Red Bull Infantry Division and as the Chief of Staff to the Minnesota National Guard Joint Force Headquarters. He served in Kuwait, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Irag.
The Minnesota National Guard is the nation's tenth largest, with 13,000 members. It is under state jurisdiction and can be directed by the Governor to assist the state during state emergencies, including natural disasters. In war time, the Minnesota National Guard can be called into federal active service under the President of the United States.
Following the press conference, Governor Dayton held a media availability to answer questions on a variety of topics, including Mayo Clinic's potential closing of its Albert Lea services and his impressions of the Supreme Court review of his line-item veto of the legislature's funding.
