35:26Now PlayingSenate Republicans released their 2018 legislative agenda at a State Capitol press conference Monday, February 26. Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka outlined three key priorities: adjusting Minnesota's tax code to recognize the federal tax law changes; enacting "Caring for People" initiatives that include improving school safety, protecting the elderly, and curbing opioid addiction. The third key priority is to secure infrastructure and transportation improvements through the sale of bonds.
In describing the proposals billed as "Caring for People," Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka cited school safety as foremost. The effort, he explained, would be led by the education committee chairs, Senator Carla Nelson, R-Rochester, and Senator Eric Pratt, R-Prior Lake.
"It's high time we make our schools safe and secure for our students," said Nelson, who chairs the E-12 Education Finance Committee. She said that the solutions would be flexible to allow each school district to shape the best safety measures. According to Nelson, SF 2054 will establish a "safe school" revenue stream to assist in the effort.
Senator Pratt said his E-12 Education Policy Committee will examine lifting the barriers to grant school administrators greater flexibility and authority in enacting safety measures.
