28:11Now PlayingHIgh school students would learn about sexual exploitation prevention as a result of the prevalence of sex trafficking in Minnesota, according to a bill sponsored by Senator Paul Anderson, R-Plymouth. Proponents of the measure appeared before the Senate E-12 Education Policy Committee Tuesday, February 27.
Jessica Melnik, founder of Girls United MN, told committee members, "Many of the girls and I heard about the suspected uptick of sex trafficking during the Super Bowl, and we wanted to hear more. We learned that this problem happens in our state 365 days of the year to victims as young as eight years old. We also learned that this problem is not something localized to the metro, suburban or rural area. This problem is pervasive in all walks of life."
The bill will be considered as part of the omnibus education policy bill.
