36:59Now PlayingGregg Mast, Executive Director of Clean Energy Economy Minnesota, showcased a report indicating that Minnesota leads the Midwest in clean energy job growth, with about 59,000 residents currently working in the related industries. Mast joined Governor Mark Dayton, Employment and Economic Development Commissioner Shawntera Hardy and industry representatives at a State Capitol press conference Wednesday, August 8.
According to Mast, clean energy jobs in Minnesota grew at a rate of 2.6 percent from 2016 through 2017, growing twice as fast as the overall job growth rate in Minnesota. He further said the industry's job growth rate is expected to reach 4.6 percent in the coming year.
According to industry representatives, the challenges for the industry include developing energy storage capabilities and hiring enough qualified workers to fill the anticipated vacancies.
Governor Dayton attributed the growth of the industry to the renewable energy standards set several years ago. According to Dayton, Minnesota achieved the standard seven years early, and Minnesota secures over 25 percent of its energy from renewable sources, such as wind and solar energy.
