1:35:49Now PlayingDrivers would face tougher penalties for distracted driving and would also be required to keep their hands off their cell phones, according to two bills advanced Wednesday, January 23, by the Senate Transportation Committee. SF 75, sponsored by Senator David Osmek, R-Mound, toughens the penalty for causing an accident or bodily injury if distracted when driving. SF 91, authored by Senator Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, requires drivers to use "hands free" technology when interacting with their cell phones.
"Minnesota is way behind in the forefront of how to keep drivers safe on our roads," said Danielle Wishard-Tudor in testifying before the committee. "A distracted driver weaved all the way into my brother's lane and collided with him at 65 miles per hour without even breaking because he was distracted. My brother died in his own lane..." she said.
The bills were forwarded to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
