1:15:44Now PlayingWith no increase being proposed for the military and veterans affairs budget, a key Senate committee advanced a funding plan Thursday, April 4, that levied concerns among military organizations about funding future requests.
Don Kerr, Executive Director of the Department of Military Affairs, chastised lawmakers for failing to fund reintegration activities for military members and families as well as recruitment incentive efforts, such as tuition reimbursement. "I don't understand how this chamber can look at this budget and say this is an appropriate time to request a $2 million dollar reduction in the Department of Military Affairs, in the National Guard, while we have the 34th division headquarters deployed to a combat zone, and this will directly affect them, because they are returning in July," he said.
Senator Andrew Lang, R-Olivia, said, "The things that you brought up are some of the concerns that I have personally, and I know Senator Anderson shares those concerns...and I ask that you bear with us through this political process."
The bill was sent to the Finance Committee for further review.
