1:18:46Now PlayingThe Senate Transportation Committee advanced two bills Wednesday, March 4, one that would ease the process for Minnesotans applying for a REAL ID and another requiring voters to show state-approved identification prior to voting.
According to bill author Senator Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, people who desire REAL ID, which allows a person to access federal facilities, including boarding an airplane, should begin applying for it very soon. To help ease the process, the bill eases the proof-of-residency requirements in several ways, including extending the time for which residency documents are considered valid from 90 days to one year.
The second measure advanced by the committee requires voters to present state-approved photo identification when voting. Newman said that in close elections, voter fraud could affect the outcome and that the measure is designed to prevent fraud. Prior to the vote, the committee defeated an amendment offered by lead DFL member Senator Scott Dibble that would propose a constitutional amendment to ensure "free, fair and equal" elections.
