7:26Now PlayingA debate on whether Senators should be required to wear masks in the Senate Chamber occupied a major portion of the Senate floor session Thursday, January 7, as the Senate adopted temporary operational rules.
Senator Melissa Wiklund, DFL-Bloomington, proposed the rule change, citing the concern among some Senators about attending floor sessions when wearing masks are optional. Senate Majority Leader indicated that all Senators were wearing masks on Thursday, and he was concerned of the potential ethics accusations that could arise should a Senator remove a mask. Wiklund's proposed mandate failed to win Senate support, and the Senate adopted a rule encouraging Senators and staff to wear a mask when conducting Senate business.
In other action, Senator Jeremy Miller, R-Winona, was elected as the Senate President for the 2021-2022 session.
