15:34Now PlayingTensions over the allegations of an unfair 2020 election and subsequent insurgence at the U.S. Capitol spilled over into the State Government Finance and Policy and Elections Committee hearing Wednesday, January 27. Senator Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, presented SF 173, a bill that would require citizens to present a photo ID for voter registration and to vote, create a voter identification card for those lacking a photo ID and establish provisional ballots for individuals who vote without proper identification. Voters casting a provisional ballot would have up to one week to obtain valid identification and return to their county office to have their ballot verified.
In 2012, voters rejected a similar voter ID amendment to Minnesota’s constitution. Senator Newman called the bill “a modern election tool,” and suggested that it is time to revisit the issue again. Secretary of State Steve Simon objected to the bill, noting Minnesota’s exceptional record of voter turnout and asserting that Minnesota’s 2020 election was “fundamentally fair, honest, accurate and secure.” Senator Newman responded, “I believe this is… a legitimate question, and we have the right to bring bills forward and have discussions amongst us.”
The bill was approved on a party-line vote and referred to the Transportation Committee.
