18:46Now PlayingIn both theory and practice, the line of succession for the position of Lieutenant Governor has created consternation. Senator John Marty, DFL-Roseville, offered a potential solution, SF 57, to the State Government Finance and Policy and Elections Committee Tuesday, February 23. Marty’s bill proposes to amend the Minnesota Constitution so that a vacancy in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor would be filled by a gubernatorial appointment, with the consent of the Senate. Currently, the Senate President is elevated to fill the role.
“I think any of you who watched what happened in the last few months with Senator Miller stepping down because he really did not want to leave the Senate, and having watched that three years earlier with Senator Fischbach, I don’t think that’s the way we want to do it…that’s not serving the Senate well,” Marty said.
The bill was laid over for possible inclusion the state government omnibus bill.
