9:08Now PlayingA measure to provide the state judiciary with stronger tools to sentence persons convicted with first degree attempted murder of a peace officer won the approval of a key Senate committee Wednesday, March 10. Sponsored by Senator John Jasinski, R-Faribault, the bill, SF 82, resulted from the shooting of Waseca Officer Arik Matson, who was gravely injured, and rewrites the Sentencing Guidelines to allow for stiffer penalties beyond the twenty years incarceration currently allowed.
Matson and his wife Megan appeared remotely during the meeting, making an emotional appeal for the change. "There is never going to be enough justice, but this is at least a start," said Megan. In speaking emotionally to Matson, Senator Karla Bigham, DFL-Cottage Grove, said, "I am inspired by your wife. This bill sets the example that if something happens, there is justice."
The bill was sent to the Senate Finance Committee.
