30:31Now PlayingRepublican lawmakers expressed disgust with a provision recently inserted into a bill that would end electronic pull tab games in their current form beginning in September 2022. The bicameral group of legislators were joined by impacted business and charity representatives at a press conference Wednesday, May 5.
Rep. Keith Franke, R-St. Paul Park, said that he’s concerned about the potential harm to charities and small businesses. Senator Karin Housley, R-Stillwater, said that this issue has become the number one topic of emails from constituents. “Our locally, family-owned bars and restaurants have had a really, really rough year, and taking away their electronic pull tabs is like kicking them when they’re down,” she said.
In a statement, Rep. Zack Stephenson, DFL-Coon Rapids, explained that the law change is necessary because the state is violating its 2012 agreement with Minnesota’s tribal nations that the electronic pull tabs would not resemble slot machines. “This is about the state honoring our agreement. The state has a very long history of not keeping its word when it comes to agreements made with tribal governments. We don't want to be a part of that long history of not keeping our word,” he wrote.
