11:58Now PlayingBudget targets, federal tax conformity and the responsibility for federal COVID-related relief spending are among the legislative issues that have been resolved by Governor Tim Walz and legislative leaders. The announcement was made at a press conference Monday morning, May 17, the day on which the legislature is constitutionally required to adjourn, with or without a budget for the coming biennium.
The $52 billion dollar plan provides additional funding for education while implementing tax breaks for businesses and unemployed individuals impacted by the pandemic.
“The work is not done. It just began, and now we have clear guidance about where to go,” said Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka on the agreement over budget appropriations. Conference committees are expected to meet as working groups over the coming weeks to resolve differences in fiscal and policy matters.
It will be necessary for Governor Walz to call the legislature back into session to finish work on the budget before July 1, the start of the state’s next fiscal year. Until then, the working groups must begin finalizing details in the many budget areas by June 4, so legislation can be prepared for introduction in an anticipated June 14 special session.
