21:28Now PlayingHouse and Senate DFL members gathered for an outdoor press conference Wednesday, June 9, to call for an orderly process in ending the eviction moratorium. Landlords have limited eviction authority under a COVID 19 peacetime emergency restriction, and allowing landlords to remove troublesome tenants while securing back payments remains a policy issue for the housing working group.
According to Representative Alice Hausman, co-chair of the housing working group, about 69,000 households in Minnesota owe more than $214 million in back rent. "And that means that we have to be very careful as to how we move out of this," she said. "We have over $500 million dollars in federal money that can pay these bills, but that takes some time," she added.
Negotiations between the Senate and the House working group members are ongoing, including discussions regarding the process by which tenants are informed of amounts owed for past rent.
