11:42Now PlayingSenate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka announced that he will be stepping down as Senate Majority Leader. He met with the media at the Senate State Fair Booth Wednesday, September 1, to discuss his decision and explain that he is considering seeking the Republican endorsement to run against Governor Tim Walz in the 2022 election.
Gazelka said that he remains neutral on which current Senate Republican Caucus member should replace him. The new leader would be tasked with helping finalizing a potential September special session agenda with the other caucus leaders and Walz. Two issues awaiting legislative action is bonus pay for COVID-19 frontline workers and drought relief.
Senate Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake, announced Wednesday that she is seeking the office of Governor, and former member Scott Jenson, R-Chaska, is running for the office as well.
