1:07:04Now PlayingThe Frontline Worker Pay Working Group began discussions Tuesday, August 31, on the disbursement of bonus payments for workers who faced significant risks in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Members are expected to deliver a plan to Governor Walz and legislative leaders by Monday, September 6.
A divide has emerged over the parameters of the awards between workers in health-related fields and workers in many impacted industries, including meatpacking, grocery, education and childcare. Senator Mary Kiffmeyer, R-Big Lake, highlighted workers who knowingly exposed themselves to the virus. “Those who knew the risk, continued to take care of patients knowing the intense risk that they had, deserve special consideration,” she said.
Senator Erin Murphy, DFL-St. Paul, suggested that health care workers are not alone in facing risk. “I think it would be disheartening for those who stepped up, did that work they were required to do, and then saying we’re going to attach a different value to some versus others,” she said.
Members agreed to continue talking to each other about a potential agreement before the final meeting of the working group on Thursday, September 2.
