8:01Now PlayingSenate Education Finance Chair Mary Kunesh, DFL-New Brighton, revealed the proposed two-year education funding plan for prekindergarten through twelve grade students . The bill was presented to committee members Wednesday, March 29, following a moment of silence in remembrance of the Nashville, Tennessee, elementary school shooting victims.
"We are making investments in our Minnesota students like we never done before, and our focus, again, is on the individual academic success, the mental health, the well being of all of our students, " said Kunesh.
According to Kunesh, the bill increases per pupil funding, boosts aid for English learner programs and special education, subsidizes mental health support in schools, expands early learning scholarships and enhances community education programs. The bill further supports efforts to increase the number of Teachers of Color in the classroom, and it invests in literacy programs to improve student reading. And, for the first time according to Kunesh, the bill would provide direct library aid to all Minnesota schools.
