5:56Now PlayingThe Senate gave its final approval to a bill designed to capture federal funds that are available to states for energy infrastructure development and clean energy projects. HF 1656, sponsored by Senate Energy Chair Nick Frentz, establishes a $115 million competitiveness fund, administered by the Dept. of Commerce, for the allocation of grants to state, local and tribal governments, public utilities, electrical cooperatives, and higher education institutions.
The Senate rejected an amendment sponsored by Senator Jason Rarick, R-Pine City, that would have delayed the issuance of grants for 90 days. Rarick expressed concern that smaller entities may lack resources to compete with larger utilities for planning and presenting notable projects.
The bill was sent to Governor Tim Walz for his signature.
