10:45Now PlayingWhat does Minnesota’s nuclear portfolio produce? As of now, the state’s two nuclear plants generated just over 27% of Minnesota's electricity in 2024. That's according to Xcel Energy, who owns and operates the sites. The energy company also says the plants support more than 1,100 jobs, generate nearly $40 million in local taxes annually, and produce over $1 billion in economic activity every year as well.
Nuclear energy’s economic impact is just one of the issues senators must consider when it comes to managing the state's energy resources. Another key topic is the environmental impact of nuclear power plants and their byproducts.
As a lead sponsor for Minnesota’s Renewable Energy Standard Statute, Senator Nick Frentz, DFL-North Mankato, has long called for cleaner energy. He now shares with Senate Spotlight’s Veronica Marshall his thoughts on whether nuclear energy is the answer to Minnesota’s plans to be carbon-neutral by 2040, and how renewable energy sources like wind and solar fit into that conversation as well.
