It’s a topic that Senator Ron Latz, DFL-St. Louis Park, is familiar with. He led the Gun Violence Prevention Working Group during the 2025 interim, where several Annunciation parents testified about the shooting at the school that killed two students. Senator Latz also chairs the Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, where the latest legislation around gun violence prevention is heard. He tells Senate Spotlight’s Veronica Marshall about the challenges around enacting gun violence prevention legislation, and how voters can influence those factors.

Minnesota’s Department of Employment and Economic Development says there are currently 40 data centers in Minnesota certified to receive the state’s data center sales tax exemption. More could be on the way. Senator Bill Lieske, R-Lonsdale, says data centers play an essential role in technological progress and belong in Minnesota, but they need to be regulated, especially around zoning. He argues that enterprise data centers, because of their size, should be in industrial parks, rather than residential neighborhoods. Senator Lieske also explains why he supports banning the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) for legislators when it comes to data center development.
Senators’ efforts to balance the budget last session are now yielding results. According to Minnesota Management and Budget’s February Forecast, the state’s once projected deficit has shifted to a surplus. While that’s good news, uncertainty remains – such as federal government funding being withheld. Senate leaders are responding to the report and outlining how they plan to move forward to ensure a stable state economy and a strong quality of life for Minnesotans.
