1. First-time rapid antigen testing is being conducted in the city.
2. One lakh antigen testing kits arrived in the city and civic body has already started testing in containment areas of Mumbai.
3. Antigen tests can give results within 30 mins and know whether a patient is COVID positive or not.
4. A positive antigen test is considered a confirmed case.
5. A negative test result will still need to be confirmed by RT-PCR test.
6. BMC says that in the monsoon many people were likely to be feverish because of change of weather and these people would like to get tested to rule out COVID-19, which is where mass availability of the antigen test would help.
7. BMC plans to do 2K tests per day taking total per day testing to 6-6,500 in Mumbai.
Where will these kits be used?
1. BMC conducted 424 tests yesterday in COVID care centres of containment areas of Borivali, Malad and Kandivali. Out of which 25 tested positive.
2. BMC has already distributed kits to four medical colleges in the city - Seth GS Medical College attached to KEM, LTM Medical college known as Sion medical college, Topiwala National medical college near Mumbai Central and HBT medical college attached to Cooper.
3. It will be used for patients who are brought to hospital with other illness in a serious condition or need an urgent operation, they can undergo antigen test to find out COVID status immediately.
4. Starting next week, BMC will also test its front-line workers.
5. BMC will invite private labs too if they interested to purchase.
6. If a senior citizen who is above 70 years and wants to do home testing, prescription not required but for others, a prescription will be required.
