Will India need to resort to other methods while the 5 point consensus is signed? | The Urban Debate

On the Urban Debate today, Tanvi Shukla talks about the LAC standoff issue between India and China. China continues to provoke India and the result is a five-month-long standoff. A meeting between India’s External Minister and his counterpart from China was the part of a meeting in Moscow and both the parties have decided on the 5 point consensus on how to take the situation forward. According to the consensus, the differences will not be allowed to become a dispute. Both sides will abide by the existing agreements and that India and China will agree to continue with dialogue. Some of the questions that Tanvi Shukla addresses today include ‘will the latest talks lead to a breakthrough?’ ‘Are we headed for an armed conflict with China?’

Snehesh Philip, Senior Associate Editor at The Print states that statements have come from China talking about peace. But I am sceptical because they do the exact opposite of what they say. We will have to wait for the words to turn into action. He further adds that from a military perspective we shouldn’t let our guards down, we should be prepared. Jayadeva Ranade, Former Additional Secretary, adds that the fact there was a meeting between the two foreign ministers, to a very limited extent, is a positive sign. My suspicion is that China is doing this to buy time for something else they have planned.

Lt Gen DS Hooda states that he doesn’t see a quick and early resolution. There’s nothing new in the 5-point consensus too. It’s the same old chatter. We have to keep our powder dry.
