42:14Now PlayingOn The Urban Debate with Tanvi Shukla, we discuss the new law announced by the central government to tackle pollution in the Delhi-NCR region.
Year after year Delhi chokes as pollution keeps on increasing. To curb this pollution, the central government has announced the formation of a high powered commission with 20 permanent members which will look at the issue of air quality management in the national capital region.
The new law imposes a penalty for violators which goes up to one crore rupees as a fine and also a jail term of up to five years depending on the violation. The law will be effective immediately and will look into stubble burning, dust pollution, and other pollution problems prevalent in the region.
Reena Gupta from Aam Aadmi Party states that she does not see anything new in this particular ordinance. She further states that they already had EPCA with the powers that have been promised in this commission. But, she continues that, EPCA did not use its powers because there is no political will to actually do anything.
