5:15Now PlayingCovishield (the local name for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine produced in the UK) and Covaxin, locally manufactured by the pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech, were given the green light by India's drug regulator. According to a report, the percentage of people opting for covishield is more than covaxin in India.
It all began when the regulator announced that, as an abundant precaution, the vaccine was approved for limited use in emergency situations in the public interest, in clinical trial mode, especially in the sense of mutant strain infection. Experts questioned how millions of vulnerable people were cleared for emergency use of a vaccine while their trials were still ongoing.
Whereas, the Indian manufacturers of the vaccine, the Serum Institute (SII), claim that Covishield is "highly effective" and supported by Brazil and United Kingdom phase III trial results. Clinical trials are a three-phase method of evaluating whether the vaccine causes healthy immune responses and whether any unacceptable side effects are triggered by it.
