The rules cover everything from naming officials including a resident grievance officer, a chief enforcement officer, and a nodal contact person to complaint resolution, tracking of objectionable material, filing a compliance report, and removing objectionable content. Facebook says it 'aims to comply' and that it will continue to negotiate the new IT rules with the government. If social media firms do not follow the guidelines, they risk losing their status and rights as intermediaries, as well as facing criminal charges under Indian law.
