This new statement of the Centre in the Rajya Sabha contradicts the February numbers where it had said in the Lok Sabha that 340 people had died over the past five years while cleaning sewers and septic tanks. Mallikarjun Kharge and L Hanumanthaiah had questioned the central government about the number of deaths due to manual scavenging in the house and Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale had replied that no deaths have been reported.
