The Opposition aims to target the Centre over slashing the interest rate on employees provident funds from 8.5% to 8.1%. Yesterday, Kerala Labour Minister V Sivankutty has also asked the central government to maintain the interest rate on employees' provident fund (EPF) deposits at 8.5 per cent and not to slash it to 8.1 per cent as recommended by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT). This is the lowest interest rate since 1977-78 on deposits that employees make towards their retirement fund. The interest rate on employee provident funds that year stood at 8%.
