14:57Now PlayingIn this episode of The Urban Debate, with Heena Gambhir, we discuss the recent controversy in Kerala where two dancers, belonging to 2 different communities were blocked from performing at a temple. Mansiya VP, a Bharatanatyam Ph.D. research researcher, was raised in a traditional Muslim family. In another incident, Soumya Sukumaran, the founder-director of Kalanjali foundation of performing arts, alleged the authorities of Koodalmanikyam Temple, Irinjalakuda, canceled her performance scheduled for April 21 as she is a non-Hindu. The state government-controlled Devaswom board took punitive action against the Koodalmanikyam temple, stating that non-Hindus are not permitted to perform inside the temple grounds. "This is shocking. Art is beyond religion & politics. Appealing the state authorities to take a correct stand in such cases," said Sudha Chandran, an actress & Bharatnatyam dancer.
