24:31Now PlayingIn this episode of The Urban Debate with Heena Gambir, we will be discussing the ongoing fuel tax politics that erupted after Prime Minister Narendra on Wednesday urged the CMs of non-BJP-ruled states to cut down on the excise duty to lower the burden of fuel prices. Today, the Tamil Nadu government hit back at the Centre and reiterated its earlier demand to reduce the cess and surcharges levied on fuel prices and merge them with basic tax rates so that states receive their rightful share of the union taxes. We are joined by the Finance Ministry, P Chidambaram, exclusively to share his views on this. "I don't think freebies should be banned in a developing country like India," says Congress leader P. Chidambaram. "What right does the center have to ask states to reduce taxes on fuel when it itself is heavily imposing them on consumers?" he further added. He also talked about the LIC IPO, which will open for subscriptions on May 4. Listen in!
