Police said Saranya, 24, was a Dalit and her husband, Mohan, 21, a nicker. Police arrested Saranya's brother Sakthivel, 31, a resident of Cholapuram Thulukkaveli village near Kumbakonam, and his friend Ranjith, 28, of Devanancheri, a neighbouring village, for the murders. Saranya and Mohan got married in Chennai five days ago and then informed her family. Police said Sakthivel invited Saranya and Mohan for a feast in Thulukkaveli intending to eliminate them. When they stepped out of their house, Sakthivel and Ranjith hacked them to death and escaped.
