As President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country, Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew in the Western Province, according to the office of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Following President Rajapaksa's early-morning Wednesday departure from the country in a military plane, protests erupted in the nation's capital, Colombo. According to reports, a senior Maldivian leader intervened to help the President, his wife, and two bodyguards arrive in Male. On July 13, Rajapaksa was supposed to resign, however the Parliamentary Speaker has not yet received his letter of resignation. At the same time, the Indian High Commission in Colombo issued a statement saying that it "categorically condemns false and speculative media accusations that India assisted Rajapaksa's recent travel out of Sri Lanka."
