The so-called "golden era" of UK-China relations, as trumpeted by previous prime minister David Cameron, was "gone, along with the mistaken belief that commerce would immediately lead to social and political transformation," he stated in his first significant address on foreign policy.
In his speech at the Lord Mayor's Banquet in London, he claimed that as a result, Britain would "need to adapt its approach to China."
