1:51Now PlayingThe Supreme Court has agreed to hear petitions from various high courts seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act (SMA). On March 13, the pleas will be heard. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud issued the directives, noting that various petitions pending before high courts involving similar issues should be transferred to and decided by the Supreme Court. The Union government has been given until February 15 to file an affidavit. A slew of petitions seeking legal recognition of same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act are pending in Delhi, Gujarat, and Kerala high courts. The Supreme Court has been assigned to hear all of the appeals.
