They claimed that even though they passed the test, they were still denied employment, and that the majority of the protestors were women. The demonstrators have begun a sit-in protest. The recruitment of teachers had been a particularly divisive and contentious issue in the state of West Bengal. In relation to the teacher recruitment test, senior Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee and his associate Arpita Mukherjee were arrested last year on suspicion of participating in the school jobs fraud. However, there have been numerous protests by teacher candidates.
